School breaks and summer vacations are exciting times for children. It’s an opportunity for them to unwind, explore their interests, and have fun. However, parents often worry about their children’s productivity during these breaks. The good news is that there are plenty of activities kids can engage in that foster learning, personal growth, and creativity without requiring significant financial investment. In this blog post, we will explore budget-friendly options that parents can encourage their children to pursue during school breaks or summer vacations.
Cooking and Baking
Involve kids in the kitchen and let them try their hand at cooking and baking. Following recipes, measuring ingredients, and experimenting with flavors not only enhances their culinary skills but also teaches them about nutrition, kitchen safety, and teamwork. In our family and homeschool, this is something that we do all year round and not just during the school break. I believe that all kids need to learn how to cook to survive in the real world. Learning to cook and bake simple recipes can also be a way for them to earn if they want to start a food business. This was a popular and thriving business during the pandemic. Many of those who lost their jobs turned to this kind of business during the pandemic.
Gardening
Gardening provides an opportunity for children to connect with nature and learn about plants and the environment. Kids can start small with potted plants, herbs, or vegetables, learn about proper care and maintenance, witness the process of growth firsthand and learn the importance of environmental conservation. Gardening promotes responsibility, patience, and an understanding of the natural world. Parents can allocate a small space in the backyard or create a container garden on the balcony or windowsill. Children can plant and care for flowers, herbs, or vegetables, learning about nurturing
Arts and Crafts
Engaging in arts and crafts activities fosters creativity and enhances fine motor skills. Children can explore various mediums such as drawing, painting, or crafting with recyclable materials. Encourage them to create their own masterpieces or follow tutorials found online or in books. Art allows kids to express themselves while developing patience, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills. During the school year, kids are not given a lot of time to pursue arts and crafts in most schools. the focus is on academic subjects, usually. But art and craft activities are therapeutic and relaxing. These kinds of activities can help kids to destress and relax during the school break.
Physical Activities
Staying active is crucial for a child’s overall development. Encourage kids to participate in outdoor activities such as running, biking, hiking, swimming, playing sports with friends or simply taking regular walks. Physical activities enhance fitness levels, build teamwork skills, and promote a healthy lifestyle. Encourage and challenge your kids to go outside, enjoy the sun, and be one with nature while at the same time exercising. Do you know that physical fitness promotes discipline and teamwork as well as enhances focus and concentration, which can positively impact academic performance?
Educational Online Games on Money and Entrepreneurship
In today’s digital age, online gaming has become a popular form of entertainment for children during school breaks and summer vacations. As parents, we have an opportunity to harness the potential of these games and make them not only enjoyable but also educational for our kids. By choosing educational games for our children’s online gaming experiences, we can provide them with a valuable learning platform while they have fun and engage in interactive digital environments. Educational online games are designed to be interactive and hands-on, encouraging active participation and critical thinking. Many of these games present challenges, puzzles, and problem-solving scenarios that require children to use their reasoning skills, strategize, and make informed decisions. Moreover, they provide a safe and controlled online environment for children to explore and learn. As they progress through the game, children are motivated to overcome obstacles, think creatively, and develop essential cognitive skills such as analytical thinking, memory retention, and logical reasoning. These skills can have a positive impact on their academic performance and overall cognitive development.
Introducing educational online games focused on money and entrepreneurship can help children develop financial literacy and an entrepreneurial mindset. These can teach children valuable financial and business skills in an interactive and engaging way. These games simulate real-life scenarios, allowing kids to learn and experience budgeting, managing finances, customer service, investing, making financial decisions, and the basics of running a business. These games provide an interactive and engaging way for children to learn about basic arithmetic, money management and develop essential entrepreneurial skills. Here are some of the online games on financial literacy and entrepreneurship that I let my kids play.
- Supermarket Numbers Game – Kids will have the opportunity to enhance their mathematical skills while enjoying the game. In the upper left corner of the game, there is a numerical goal that needs to be achieved. Initially, most blocks in the game are addition blocks, and if a block does not have a symbol, it defaults to addition. The objective is to select blocks in a way that adds up to the displayed numerical goal. As kids progress through the game, they will encounter additional blocks with functions such as subtraction, multiplication, and division. However, before selecting a multiplication or division block, they must choose at least one block with no operator. The equation displayed below the goal number will change as kids make their block selections. To proceed to the next stage, they need to fill the shopping cart meter to 100% and continue playing through all 10 levels. This game provides a fun and interactive way for kids to practice and improve their mathematical abilities. I liked this game a lot because my kids got to practice their skills in the four basic operations while playing.
- Tap Supermarket – In this educational grocery store simulation game, kids will learn to have a macro view of running a business, good customer service, inventory management, manpower planning and investing to expand a business. When displays are empty, kids can restock them by clicking on the green circles. Similarly, in the stock room located in the upper left corner, empty shipping pallets can be restocked by clicking on the green circles. To serve customers, kids must click on the checkout line and check out each customer individually. If there are multiple customers in line, they need to repeatedly click on the checkout to ring up all of them. Using their in-game earnings, kids can expand their store inventory by purchasing new display racks. Additionally, they can leverage their experience to unlock a second checkout lane and a third grocery stocker, further enhancing their store management capabilities. This is one of the games that my kids and I enjoyed playing.
- Farm Town – This is an engaging online game where players can immerse themselves in the joys of farming. From planting seeds and tending to crops to raising farm animals, the game offers a variety of activities to keep players entertained. The fruits of your labor can be sold at the town market using a truck, allowing you to earn funds to expand your farming operations. With the money you earn, you can invest in more seeds, acquire commercial culinary equipment, and even research new food production techniques. To add an extra layer of excitement, you can transform your raw commodities into intermediate and finished goods by utilizing your kitchen. Each level presents a unique goal. Achieving these goals unlocks the next level, ensuring a continuous sense of progress and unlocking new possibilities in Farm Town. My kids and I found it a bit hard to reach the higher levels wherein we could have more equipment to expand our farm operations.
- Ice Cream Bar – In this simulation game, kids will learn important skills like paying attention to details, customer service, the value of accuracy and not just speed, and planning while running an ice cream store. By observing the thought bubble above customers, kids can determine their orders and the remaining time they have to serve them. They will then need to select a cup or cone and assemble the ice cream treat exactly as requested, starting from the bottom ingredient and working their way up. Serving the finished product is as simple as tapping on it. If mistakes are made, kids can easily tap on the trash can located in the lower left corner of the game. Unlike other similar simulation games, there is no need to collect payments from customers in this game. In case ingredients run out, kids can replenish them by clicking on the coins where they were located. The objective is to reach the level goal by serving customers before the timer runs out, progressing through all 20 stages for an exciting gameplay experience.
- Pizza Baker – While playing the Pizza Baker online game, kids can engage in a fun and educational experience. They will learn valuable skills as they follow the process of creating pizzas for customers. By observing the order bubble in the upper left, they can identify the specific pizza desired by each customer. Kids will then have to make choices like selecting the appropriate crust type and pouring the correct sauce onto the pizza. Additionally, they will need to choose the right toppings to complete the pizza. Once the pizza is ready, they can select the polar bear baker to bake it. In case of errors, kids can simply drag the pizza to the trash icon and start over. Successfully completing each pizza will earn them income. However, they must complete and cook the pizzas before the timer reaches zero, as failing to do so will result in losing a life. With three lives, kids must be careful not to make mistakes or else it’s game over. This is what my kids considered the second most enjoyable game they played among these five.
By engaging in these five (5) budget-friendly activities, kids can continue their personal development, foster a love for learning, and have fun while doing so. Remember, the key is to encourage our children to pursue activities that align with their interests and provide a balance between structured learning and free play. With a little creativity and resourcefulness, we, parents can help our children make the most of their school breaks and summers while staying productive and engaged.
