When I was still a little girl, one of my dreams was to be a book author who would make a difference in people’s lives through the book I will publish. However, I was made to believe by some people who had a strong influence in my young mind that writing is not a lucrative career. So, I thought of other fields that seemed more promising.
During my senior year in high school, we took a test to help us find out in what field we would most likely succeed. I was looking forward to my counseling session because I had varied interests. I needed help and guidance in choosing the course that I would take in college.
I was told by our guidance counselor that I scored high in a number of fields. She said that I can pursue any of those fields and still be successful. Instead of rejoicing at what seemed to be “good news,” I felt really disappointed. The result of my test and the interpretation or advice given to me during my counseling session did not help me in my confusion.
Thus, when it was time to choose a course in my UPCAT application form (the form for students applying at the University of the Philippines), I chose my course based on what I thought was promising as indicated by trends and what sounded nice. My first choice was Computer Science; while my second choice was Business Economics. Luckily, I got accepted in my second choice.
Things were going well in the beginning but when the lessons got harder, I discovered that I didn’t really enjoy being in that course. I realized that I didn’t even want to be an economist.
To cut the long story short, I shifted to another course, BS Hotel and Restaurant Administration. It wasn’t my first choice again. But, it was one of the closest to my previous course and I wanted desperately to graduate soon. I also wanted a course that I somehow liked as well after learning it the hard way that one must really enjoy the course that he/she is taking.
I was fortunate enough to land a job related to my course right after college. I started as a Management Trainee. I was part of a group who were being groomed to become future Restaurant Managers. (If you are interested in becoming one or applying for this position, check out the
Restaurant Manager resume samples here at onlineresumebuilders.com.) After around two years of practicing it, I had an AHA moment. And in that moment, I realized that helping people grow and realize their full potential were things that made me very happy and fulfilled. This happened while I was a manager in a restaurant chain and I was in charge of the training and development of our service crew, supervisors and new managers. I was also in charge of the performance appraisal of our people. I felt good every time an employee who has been trained by me gets promoted. Suddenly, I found my passion!
I wasted no time in pursuing it and left my job as restaurant manager even though I was due for another promotion soon.
Many people didn’t understand my decision or career move. They thought that I was wasting a very good opportunity. I thought otherwise. I thought that I would be wasting precious time not pursuing work that lights a fire on my belly, warms my heart and makes my spirit soar.
I do not regret making that career shift. In fact, I thank God for giving me the courage to step out of my comfort zone and into my courage zone. I thank God for leading me out of my confusion and helping me discover my true passion.
And that dream of someday publishing a book that would make a difference in people’s lives? That dream has been fulfilled in 2006 when I published my first book When My Bridegroom Comes. I have published two more books since then. I’m now writing another book, which I hope to finish and publish this year. I have also written several children’s stories. I’m just waiting for the illustrators to finish the drawings.
