Almost 7 years ago, I was hesitant to even explore homeschooling. I was totally surprised when my husband asked me to check it out. I think it was the first time I heard it. He convinced me to look it up and investigate it when he mentioned that our community’s leader, Bo Sanchez, is homeschooling his kids.
I read about homeschooling from Brother Bo’s blog and I listened to him talk about it numerous times. I was convinced that it was a great way to educate our firstborn son. But I had a caveat. I told him that I will homeschool our son until he is 7 years old only or maybe until Grade 1. I didn’t have the confidence to homeschool beyond that grade level or beyond that age. Also, I wasn’t sure I would be committed that long to devote time educating our son personally. The understanding is that I will be his main teacher since I am home.
Fast forward to today.
I can’t help but feel so blessed and grateful for God’s grace to have homeschooled this long. I have already homeschooled my eldest son for 6 years and we’re still on it. I have also homeschooled through different life stages. I had two pregnancies already and I have homeschooled my eldest through both pregnancies. We have also moved twice in the past years and we have homeschooled given those circumstances. I have breastfed all three children for at least two years while homeschooling. I have written and launched books in the past years while homeschooling. I’ve been working from home and running a home-based business in the past years while homeschooling. There were many months when we didn’t have a maid or helper at home and yet I still managed to homeschool the kids while managing the house, cooking and doing many other things in between. Today, I am homeschooling three children: an 8-year-old, a 5-year-old and a 2-year-old.
Isn’t it amazing how God has shown His faithfulness to me and my family?
That’s not all!
My kids are not only getting by or we are not barely covering the minimum in educating our children. We are covering topics and fields that interest our children. I had been using methods and tools that make learning fun for my kids. I am able to find ways to make our lessons engaging for the kids.
The kids are even progressing quite fast. Like this month of July, my eldest and I started with Grade 6 English already. As for Math, he is currently in Grade 3 using the Singapore Math curriculum. My second child is now in Grade 1 using Singapore Math also. Both of their reading levels are way beyond their peers. My eldest has been reading chapter books for years now. He actually reads books for adults already. My second child can now read short and simple sentences on his own.
We’ve also had a lot of family bonding through our field trips. The kids learn through our travels and we learn alongside our kids. You can read about our previous field trips here in my blog. You can click here and here for our last two field trips. You can actually type field trip in the search button of my website or blog and you will see all the blog posts I made about our many field trips.
It’s amazing how we have come this far in our journey as a homeschooling family! I would not be able to do this without the help of God. Thank God for His grace that was new every single morning! I cannot thank Him enough for His guidance and wisdom, for sustaining me and helping me endure the challenging days and moments. More importantly, I thank Him for the gift of faith and courage to take this road less traveled.
Today, I just want to pause from the busyness of our school day and the busyness of my day as a work-at-home mom and home-based business owner to savor the gifts that God has blessed me and my family with throughout the years that we’ve been homeschooling.
This was not originally part of my/our plan. But I thank God that He made His plans for me and my family known by prompting my husband. Truly, God’s plans are best! I thank God that He has made a way for me and my husband to provide the best education we could provide for our children! Highly-customized, child-centric, Catholic and Scripture-based education.
And the bonus is that I am still able to work, pursue my passions and do the things that make me happy and fulfilled while homeschooling my kids!
“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!” Luke 1:46-47
So, if you are a parent who feels in your heart that God is calling you to be more hands-on with your children through homeschooling, do not be afraid. He who calls you will equip you.
If you feel that you cannot survive with only one parent working or that you need to contribute to the family income, do not be afraid. I exhort you to have radical faith! God will not only provide for you and your children! He can and will bless you abundantly if you choose to obey Him. I say this because our family has experienced this through the years. When we chose to follow God’s lead even when we didn’t know very well how things will unfold, God slowly revealed to us step by step how steadfast He is and how He can always deliver us.
I do not promise that it would be a bed of roses. I guarantee, though, that it would be an adventure with God holding your hand.
